Home Fire Safety Tips:

In the Kitchen

bullet

Never place or store pot holders, plastic utensils, towels and other non-cooling equipment on or near the range because these items can be ignited.

bullet

Roll up or faster ling loose sleeves with pins or elastic bands while cooling. Do not reach across range while cooking. Long loose sleeves are more likely to catch fire than are short sleeves. Long loose sleeves are also more apt to catch on pot handles.

bullet

Do not place candy on the cupboard above the ranges. This will reduce the attraction kids may have for climbing on cooking equipment, thus reducing the possibility of their clothing catching fire.

Cigarette Lighters and Matches

bullet

Keep lighters and matches out of sight and out of the reach of children.

bullet

never encourage or allow a child to play with a lighter or to think of it as a toy. Do not use it as a source of amusement for a child.

bullet

always check to see that cigarettes are put off before emptying ashtrays. Stubs that are still burning can ignite trash.

Upholstered Furniture

bullet

Always check the furniture where smokers have been sitting for improperly discarded smoking materials. Ashes and lighted cigarettes can fall unnoticed behind or between cushions or under furniture.

bullet

Do not place or leave ashtrays on the arms of chairs where they can be knocked off.

Mattresses and Beddings

bullet

Do not smoke in bed. smoking in bed is a major cause of accidental fire deaths in homes.

bullet

Keep fire sources such as lighted mosquito coils at least three feet from the bed prevent the bed from catching fire.

Flammable Liquids

bullet

Take extra precautions in storing and using flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint thinners, kerosene and other flammable liquids and solvents. They produce invisible explosive vapors that can ignite by a small spark at considerable distance from the flammable substance. Store these substance outside the house.

Escape Plan

bullet

Establish advanced family planning for escape incase of fire. Include small children as a part of the discussion and rehearsal. It is especially important to make sure they understand that they must escape; they can't hide from fire under a bed or in a closet.

bullet

Your life and that of your family can be saved by foresight, planning, discussion and rehearsal.

Candles

Candles are very useful. Some decorative and scented candles are used to enhance the mood and festive atmosphere during the holiday season. Others used candles as an alternative to electric lights during power outage. However, if improperly used, candles can be a serious fire hazard.

Safety tips and precautions when handling or using candles at home:

bullet

Keep lighted candles away from flammable or combustible items such as curtains or beddings.

bullet

The candle holder must be non-combustible and sturdy enough not to tip.

bullet

Put lighted candles out of drafts, vents and curtains and out of reach of children and pets.

bullet

Extinguish the candle before leaving the room or going to bed.

bullet

Keep candles, matches and lighters out of reach of children.

bullet

Do not use a candle for light when fueling kerosene lanterns, heaters or diesel generators.

bullet

Use flashlight rather than a candle during power outage.
